My vehicle has a Check Engine Light!! THIS IS A STEP-BY-STEP PROCESS TO READING DTC CODES

Does your vehicle have a Check Engine Light illuminated on the dash and do you want help in determining why?? If so, this is absolutely the right page for you!! This blog includes a Step-by-Step which will define the tools required, critical vehicle areas and execution of reading codes.

    • If you already know you have a P0505, P0506, P0511, P0508, P0519, P0507 then skip to this page and “link to Recommended fixes for DTC’s”
    • The vehicle being used is my 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee but is applicable to any OBD 2 vehicle (generally, if your vehicle was produced in the 1990’s and later, it is an OBD 2 vehicle)

How to read check engine light codes step-by-step:

Step 1: Get yourself an OBD 2 scanner. Your goals with your vehicle will decide what scanner is best for you,
    – The orange scantron unit is a good all around scanner with read/clear code capability, basic test run capability and can stream engine data. This type cost $100-$200.
    – The black unit is a good replacement for scanners commonly used at OEM dealerships. It can read/clear codes, complete vehicle specific tests, connect to all control module systems and is fairly priced in the $150 range. To gain all mentioned functionality, user must purchase vehicle specific software packages.
    – The black/clear unit is a bluetooth scanner and connects directly to your iOS or Android device. Apps are then purchased to allow functionality similar to the black unit.

Step 2: Connect scanner to OBD 2 port. See picture for visual decription of OBD 2 port. All OBD 2 ports are of the same type but will be located at different positions pending vehicle.

Step 3: Use scanner to “Read Codes”

Step 4: Codes are now displayed on the screen and will give valuable information about your vehicles Check Engine Light.

Step 5: Goto “link to Recommended fixes for DTC’s”
